The last 2 photos relate to our visit, on Sat 2 Nov to the Mazzarello Training Centre which is part of the St Luke's Salesian Mission in Maputsoe. This is centre that takes girls who may not have done well at school and who may not have anywhere to go, and gives them a very good training, over 3 years, in sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery, pattern cutting and grading as well as computing, business, maths and language. But the curriculum does not include any art and design skills! We met Sister Consuello and staff who showed us the work made by the girls over the 3 years and we were very impressed by the standard. Also the centre is very well equipped. They have set up a production unit that currently employs 4 graduates to make items for sale such as school uniforms and hats. Sister Consuello explained that they want to become financially independent and are keen to make some products as part of Lesotho Mountain Crafts. They would like training in design skills and we will make a start by doing a workshop with the teachers before we leave.
