Colour workshops with representatives from nearly all the groups we are seeing - in all 19 participants. None of these people have ever had any art training, not even at school, but have worked very hard over the last 2 days with enthusiasm and great humour! It has been hard work but a great joy to work with them. Starting with wool windings based on the colour wheel.

We spent the day planning workshops for this week but took time to go for lunch to this place, The Cabin which is half way between Ficksburg and Ladybrand. It is a quirky place with lots of crafts and recycled work for sale. It was a lovely hot day and weather generally now is hot, hot, hot - sorry Orkney! I've been looking at the photographs on R. Orkney Facebook pages - hope it has improved!

The last 2 photos relate to our visit, on Sat 2 Nov to the Mazzarello Training Centre which is part of the St Luke's Salesian Mission in Maputsoe. This is centre that takes girls who may not have done well at school and who may not have anywhere to go, and gives them a very good training, over 3 years, in sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery, pattern cutting and grading as well as computing, business, maths and language. But the curriculum does not include any art and design skills! We met Sister Consuello and staff who showed us the work made by the girls over the 3 years and we were very impressed by the standard. Also the centre is very well equipped. They have set up a production unit that currently employs 4 graduates to make items for sale such as school uniforms and hats. Sister Consuello explained that they want to become financially independent and are keen to make some products as part of Lesotho Mountain Crafts. They would like training in design skills and we will make a start by doing a workshop with the teachers before we leave.

Members from NyeNye Crafts and Elisa Crafts met with us showing their products which include a range of sewn fabric bags, purses and needle felted animals, angels and Nativity figures. They have started making tiny animals which are very cute - see photo - and a new sling bag as modelled by the lovely Maki (Centre Manager at Ha Maqele)

N'tate Mankoe showing us the hammer mill. They pound Sorghum which is made into a gruel like porridge and maize (usually white) which is used to make papa, the staple part of the diet - a photo to follow!
